The End of Holidays

It’s the end of August, and the French are starting to trickle back from their holidays. Relaxed, tanned, and ready to start another year. The year, of course, starts in September. But for some reason the vacation calendar starts in June. Go figure.

Naturally, the most popular small talk item in the office is said vacations. When I welcome each one back, they automatically ask me “Did you take vacation?”, followed by “Did you go to the United States?”, then finally raised eyebrows and “Only 5 days!? Are you crazy?”

Apparently I am crazy, because while they are chilled out and re-energized, I am over-caffeinated and frazzled. Hey guys, welcome back! While you were gone I picked up a coffee addiction and expanded my French curse-word vocabulary. I made some reckless decisions that should have been yours, and took on half a dozen assignments that also should have been yours. During my six-day vacation I went into the office twice. Bah!
