Soldes!
Yesterday the big January soldes, or sales, started up, lifting everyone's spirits in a buzz of post-Christmas blues recovery.
David and I happened to be in a local mall on Tuesday night to go to the grocery store (when was the last time you saw a major grocery store in a shopping mall?) and saw the shop employees working late, tagging their stuff and putting up signs in the windows. I still find it weird that the entire country goes on sale for the same predetermined dates every year. This must be something set by the government.
My friend Guillaume actually took a vacation day yesterday to go shopping. I hope you laughed as uproariously as I did when you read that. In America we have a word for men who take vacation days to go shopping. And it's not "French".
In truth, I was wildly jealous, but despite the abundance of paid holiday, I still guard my vacation days like precious commodities not to be wasted on mid-week indulgances.
I am, however, considering taking next Friday off.
