Bonne Année!

Happy New Year from Paris!
Dave and I braced ourselves against the cold and went down to see the Eiffel Tower for the celebration of 2009. It wasn't nearly as crowded as we had expected, and most of the conversations we overheard were in American English. I guess the French did the smart thing and went to parties indoors.

I was pretty excited for the fireworks, but there were none. At midnight the tower sparkled - which, Dave reminded me - it does every hour every night and we can see the same on our drive home from work. But then the blue lights - which the tower has been sporting since midsummer - faded to the traditional gold and we had our old tower back. That was enough to make me jump up and down in excitement a bit - I hated the blue.
We waited a good 20 minutes for the expected fireworks, but it was only people popping champagne bottles and drunken singing. We trudged back to metro and are back home at 1:30 am, heating up a snack.

Anyway, it was a happy celebration. Maybe France is cutting back on les feux d'artifices due to the economic crisis.
