The first order of business on Sunday morning was to find the beach. We woke up early, took advantage of the modest hotel breakfast, grabbed our market basket-cum-beach bag, and set out on foot. Ten short minutes later, we were scoping out spots for our towels on the narrow beach.
The beaches of Sète are fairly sandy mixed with small stones, which turned out to be a comfortable difference between the beaches that were to come. David honed in on a small cliff that offered shade and parked himself for the day. I alternated between stretching out on my beach towel, dips in the sea, reading, and dozing. Bliss.
I could have spent the whole two weeks on that spot, but a few hours after noon David got restless and wanted to find something to eat. We walked back to the hotel, showered, and hopped into the car to ride back to town. At the last free parking lot before town (so kindly marked), we left the car and walked the rest of the way along a sunny promenade.
After a snack at a Spanish bar we continued down to the town center, where the canal jousting was still in full swing. We got caught up in the excitement again and spent the rest of the afternoon watching one guy after another get knocked into the canal.
That evening we met up with David's work friend Nicolas and his girlfriend Maude for dinner, along with Maude's sister. Nicolas and Maude were also in the South for their holidays, and had reserved a table at a beach restaurant for us. We had a great meal together, then drove up a hill for a night lookout over Sète.
