Summer Holidays: Cannes

Saturday

We had breakfast on the terrasse while our hosts fussed and told stories. Then we packed our beach bag and drove down to Cannes. We drove along the coast on the famous Boulevard de la Croissette, looking at
the beautiful cars and expensive hotels and shops. At the harbor we parked the car, and walked to the old town in the Le Suquet district. This old part of town seemed almost pushed aside, perched on a hill overlooking the flashy modern part ofCannes.

We walked around the old church and small castle for a while, but the only really appealing part of the Le Suquet district was its views. The whole place was overrun with American tourists anyway, so we soon took our leave.

Down in the city again we strolled past the Palais Festivals where the famous film festival takes place every year. At the car we didanother quickclothing change and grabbed the beach bag. We chose the least crowded of the beaches, and settled down for the rest of the afternoon.

The Cannes beach was only the second sandy beach we'd seen in the south of France. However, unlike the relatively tranquil beaches of Cannes, these were buzzing with tourists. I can only imagine how unbearable it must have been in the high season.

As evening fell we returned to the car and retraced our path along the Croisette. At another harbor we stopped to check out the posh yachts, then decided to take another cruise along the coast to appreciate the coast and look for nice cars. It was our last night in the south of France, and we spent a beautiful evening saying goodbye.
