Bavarian Breakfast

We spent our weekend in Germany, in the Karlsruhe region. I spent a few days in the Hagenbach office, and David joined me Friday night by train from Paris.

The trip was spurned by an invitation from my colleague Markus, who tempted David with a Bavarian breakfast.

Friday night we had dinner in Strasbourg after I picked David up from the train station. It would have been a lovely night if it weren't for our curse, which makes it rain every time we visit Alsace.

After dinner in a cozy "not too touristic" restaurant on the river, we walked quickly through the rain to watch the summer display of synchronized lights and music on the famous grand cathedral.

The next morning we arrived at the home of Markus and his wife in Wörth am Rhein and embarked on our Bavarian breakfast: white sausages with mustard, soft pretzels, cheese with paprika, white radishes, and of course, beer.

We had planned to go fishing after breakfast, but the weather was lousy so Markus proposed a visit to the technik museum in Speyer. Beer and sausages for breakfast and a technical museum - a real boys' weekend!

The museum was huge, and filled with all kinds of interesting stuff - cars from varying periods, massive steam locomotives, a whole range of American fire trucks, and a sailboat that had traversed the globe.

Outside in the yard, we were free to climb into a Russian helicopter, an enormous German U-boat, and a few other small planes, all mounted on poles like they were in mid-flight.

High above the others was an old Lufthansa 747 which had been cleaned out of most of its seats. It was so high up, and tilted at such a sharp angle that it was spooky, feeling like we were on a doomed aircraft. On one side a door lead onto a small enclosed balcony, allowing us the opportunity to stand aloft a real 747 wing. Beneath the plane was a big slide that carried us to the ground.

At the end of the day we took a walk though rainy Speyer, then left Markus and his family to return to our hotel in Karlsruhe. The next morning we rose early and drove to Strasbourg, hopped on the train bound for Paris and were home by late afternoon.
