How to Freak Out a Frenchman

A surefire way to shock the bejeesus out of a Frenchman is to look at him while you're typing. It drives them crazy the way we can look away from what we're writing. It's my favorite work trick.

Most French people can type well enough, but they have to do the constant keyboard-to-screen back and forth check that requires so much attention and neck exercise.

French children start school at age 3, so it seems reasonable that they'd have an academic advantage over us. But for whatever reasons, typing is not on the curriculum in French schools. When I told my colleagues that I learned how to type when I was 8 years old, they were stunned. I could almost read their minds: you don't know what a predicate nominative is, your world geography is paltry at best, you have no concept of your nation's history and you've been typing since you were 8?? Oh la!

My god, your colleagues sucent !

Or they're too old. I think this keyboard problem is now solved with the new generation being thrown on MSN at young age.

When do you switch to Azerty keyboards, by the way ? :D
