Fête d'Obama

Now that the elections are over, and France's favorite has won, I am a regular celebrity at work. I expected it to be the topic of most of the small talk I exchanged with colleagues, but I never anticipated the amount of excitement that would be aimed toward me. It's like I've won the presidency myself.

Everywhere I go, people (some I've never met before) stop to shake my hand and say "Felicitations!" Congratulations! Aren't you happy? You must be so proud! Etc. It's a little embarassing, to be honest. Gee guys, it's just one vote.

The morning radio programs can't stop talking about it. They play music that they can sing "Obama" over. Every other story is about Obama, his family, his expected staff, what he ate for breakfast, whatever.

At lunch I discussed the phenomenon with a colleague. He said, "Yes, everyone is excited. But they're starting to realize that we're still stuck with our president. Now we're all going to be depressed."

  1. Yeah, we still got ours. I suggest that now you've elected a black guy, we should step forward an elect a gay one. I think I'll support Delanoë in 2012 [and not only for that, obviously].
