Photo du Jour - November 1

Just when I was thinking I wouldn't have a photo to post tonight (unless you're interested in seeing a training room full of bored Chinese guys? Didn't think so), we had another meal adventure.

Markus and I spotted the Little Sheep restaurant on our cab ride back to the hotel. After changing our clothes and a brief reprieve, we walked the few blocks back and requested a table. While we waited we watched a crazy Kung Fu film in the reception and browsed a menu. It looked like a lot of raw meat - not a pleasant sight when one is still car sick from a taxi ride in Shanghai traffic - and I was less than enthused.

But then we were seated at a big stone table with a hot plate embedded into the center. With a lot of flailing hand gestures and pointing, we managed to order a pot of medium spicy soup and a variety of raw meats and vegetables.

The burner was turned up, a cauldron was set between us, and the plates of raw food started arriving. The soup started with a bunch of strange pods and seeds in it, plus roughly twenty cloves of garlic bobbing around. We started tossing things into our witch's brew, first tentatively, then completely gangbusters. Just wait until you see the video.

It took some experimentation to find the proper cooking time for the various meats, and I might have one or two undercooked bits. I'll have to keep this in mind if I get sick later in the week.

At one point a cleaning woman walked by and saw Markus struggle to grab a noodle out of the pot with chopsticks. She dragged the waitress back to show us how to use the ladle to extract noodles properly. We were a regular sideshow at the restaurant.

To make matters worse - or funnier - when I paid for the meal (roughly 18 euros for both of us, for the record), I accidentally gave the waitress a US quarter in place of a ten yuan piece. I hadn't even realized I had any US money on me. There was a bit of a commotion as two waitresses and the host came scurrying back to the table, peering at the coin. I gave them the proper coin and told them to keep the quarter. When Markus and I left they were still fussing over it and I had to stop to introduce them to George Washington and the bald eagle.

It was a pretty rough day of training, but dinner made it all worth it.
